Kahun successfully identifies ‘red flag’ COVID-19 patients in its pioneering computer-aided risk assessment calculator
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how evidence-based decision-making at all care levels is crucial to providing emergency care. Based on the results of a study by Petrilli et al. in New York, Kahun developed a risk calculator using patient data at admission to predict critical illness. Despite considerable differences in baseline between the two populations, of 18 patients with critical illness, 17 were correctly identified and among 127 patients with non-critical illness, 104 were correctly identified. These results indicate that published knowledge and integration with EHR systems can be applied to reliably assess patient risk in a more practical and friendly manner, potentially reducing the cognitive burden on physicians, and aid policymakers prepare better for future needs.
